One of the skills successful turkey hunters in the Ozarks work hard to master will take a featured position at the 20th annual Old-Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival, set for June 20 and 21, at the Civic Center in downtown West Plains, Mo.
Trillium Trust, in partnership with The Rocky Top Limbhangers local sponsoring chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, is excited to announce the details of the 2nd Annual “Ozarks Wild Turkey Calling Competition.” The event will be held Saturday June 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the West Plains Civic Center Theater. Prizes will be awarded to three divisions; Open, Friction, and Youth. The competition is sanctioned by the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and winners of the competition will be eligible to proceed to the national competition in Nashville, TN.
Turkey calling is a piece of the cultural heritage of the Ozarks, with skills passed down from generation to generation. “Even if you’re not a caller yourself we encourage you to join us to hear some of the best talent in the region show off their impressive calling abilities. Bring kids who love hunting and kids who have never had the chance to go out and hear a wild turkey. Enjoy short videos from the Grand National Competition and turkey callers in the woods and a short presentation on turkeys in the Ozarks,” organizers said.
Registration for callers will begin at 8 a.m. in the Civic Center and close down at 9:30 a.m. when numbers are drawn to determine the order of callers. The contest will begin at 10 a.m. and go on until all participants have completed their required calls. The calls for each division are as follows:
Open – Gobble, Callers Best Call, Purr, and Fly Down Cackle
Friction – Callers Best Call, Cutting of the Excited Hen, Adult Hen Assembly Call, and Cluck and Purr
Youth – Plain Yelp of Hen, Cutting of the Excited Hen, Putt, and Callers Best Call
Winners of each division will be awarded as follows: 1st Place – Trophy, Prize and Cash; 2nd Place – Plaque and Cash; 3rd Place – Plaque
